The Silver American Eagle coin has a rich history. It is based on Adolph Weinman’s “Walking Liberty” half dollar that was used between 1916 and the late 1940’s.

It passed it’s 35th anniversary of being in circulation with the American Eagle Coin Program in 2021.

The Silver American Eagle has guarantees of its weight by the U.S. Government. Each one has a minimum of one troy ounce of 99.9 percent pure silver. They are allowed in IRA’s.

One reason for the American Eagle’s name is that until 2021, it depicted an eagle carrying a shield with a single olive branch in one talon and an arrow in another. The design was said to represent the strength and endurance of the U.S.
